S.H.I.E.L.D. is a espionage, special law enforcement, and counter-terrorism agency. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, S.H.I.E.L.D. made its first appearance in Strange Tales #135 and normally deals with superhuman and paranormal threats.
S.H.I.E.L.D. stood for Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage and Law-Enforcement Division but was changed in 1991 to Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate. However away from comics on TV and in Films it has recently been shown to be an acronym of Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division
